Relay North Carolina (Relay NC) is funded by a surcharge on landlines and wireless connections in North Carolina and administered by the North Carolina Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing.

TTY and Voice Carry-Over (VCO) relay are not compatible with PBX system, VOIP phones or digital landlines; a dedicated landline must be used. While local calls are made at no charge, long distance calls are now available at no charge effective July 1, 2017.

 A person who is deaf or hard of hearing can use a TTY to type their message, which is read aloud to the other caller by a relay operator. The operator types the spoken message of the hearing caller to the TTY user. The average typing speed is 15 words per minute.

You as a TTY caller dial the TTY number, 711 or 800-735-2962. Relay NC will answer. Type in the area code and telephone number you wish to call and type "GA" (Go Ahead.) The relay operator dials the number and connects to the other party.

HOW DOES TTY RELAY WORK?

You type your conversation to the relay operator.  Remember to type "GA" (Go Ahead) at the end of each message.

 

The relay operator then voices your typed message to the other party.

After you type "GA", it is the other party's turn to respond. 

The relay operator relays the other party's spoken words by typing them back to you.

The Relay NC Customer Profile form allows consumers to list their preferences for calls, such as:

  • Frequently dialed numbers

  • Emergency numbers

  • Preferred gender of operator

  • Announcing relay service
